The Methodist Church of Burnet had its beginning during the days of the Civil War. Though there are no official records from this time, we know from pioneers and settlers in this area that the Methodist movement was active during those years. |
The Georgetown Circuit was the northwestern frontier mission of the Texas Conference of Methodist Churches. The first recorded Camp Meething to be held in Burnet County was led by the Rev. Josiah Whipple, who was in carge of the Austin Circuit in the Texas Conference. It was held on what is known as the Brownlee property, couth of Burnet. |
Wesley Smith, a circuit preacher, preached at several farms in Burnet County. Camp meetings were recorded this same year as having been held in Burnham Springs and Simpson's Creek. It was following these meetings that the first Methodist Church congregation was organized in Burnet County. This was prior to the Civil War. Following the War, the church was closed and the records lost. |
1812-1893 PICTURES The original building housing the Methodist Congregation in Burnet was built in 1882. It stood on the corner of Highways 281 and 29. In 1893, two wings were added to accommodate the increased membership. |
The Church moved to a new, larger home in 1938. A parsonage was built ten years later. In 1977, because of the growing needs of the community, a new church facility with educational rooms,a larger sanctuary, a fellowship hall, and a kitchen was built. This continued to serve the needs for several years. The congregation recognized that a Family Life Center was needed. It was completed in May of 2000. |
