Submitted by Marjorie Bronk Mary Jane Shanes is the coordinator of the program. Diane Caruthers, R.N., conducts interviews and evaluates potential clients and their families so they may learn what they can expect from the program and to identify what is provided. Criteria that may be evaluated includes incontinence, ability to eat and swallow, cooperation and compatibility. Wandering would be a concern. Each client has a one-on-one volunteer at all times. The care giver can be confident that their loved one will be safe and cared for while attending the respite program. Every effort is made to have the same volunteer with the same client to allow continuity and comfort. Every volunteer is trained in the work they do. Our program can host up to ten (10) clients. A light breakfast is served as clients arrive. The program offers music, crafts, games, a vegetable garden area and rest time. Clients are not " forced" to participate in activities. This program is offered under the auspices of the Capital Area Alzheimer's Association in Austin. Funding has been obtained through grants and donations. The Church is pleased to host and support this outstanding program. For information, contact Mary Jane Shanes at 512-756-9329. We have a great "used" medical equipment loan system and have helped MANY individuals with short term and long term needs. There is a “sign out” notebook in the volunteer office to help us keep track of where items are being used. Often we get a call and this record can locate a needed item that is no longer being utilized. Tammy and Jim will be glad to help you if Marjorie is not available. These supplies are available to any one with a need, not just members of our Church. We encourage any one to use these supplies without a time limit, but it is helpful to know where they are currently located. A wonderful meal program began in Burnet to offer a FREE meal every Thursday evening in the Fellowship Hall at the Church of Christ at Vanderveer and Highway 29. This program was started by Joann and Ben Thomas from the Episcopal Church as an outreach mission for any one that needs or wants a good free meal once a week. The program has been embraced by the Ministerial Alliance of Churches. Volunteers are needed to help with the cooking, serving and to assist with clean up. Members of the First United Methodist Church provide desserts every week. Come share a meal and fellowship between 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM every Thursday. Families are welcome. For information, contact Joann and Ben Thomas at (512) 793-6177. The Mission's Committee is alive and well, but has changed focus and direction. We actively work to support LA Care, the local food bank, with a monthly meat purchase averaging between 350 and 400 pounds of meat every month to supplement what LA Care can offer their clients. The meat is purchased from monetary donations identified directly for LA Care. We transport weekly food donations from the Church to LA Care. The Mission Committee provides support to the Respite Program and the Community Kitchen as a liaison with the Church. We collect eye glasses for the Lion's Club. We identify and monitor First Aid kits throughout the Church campus. We keep medical supplies clean and in good working order. We offer a Nurse Ministry every Tuesday morning from 10:00AM to 12 Noon. A nurse can provide blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks and general assistance with medical questions and issues. We have established an annual Mission calendar with missions identified so members of the Church can pick and choose what mission or missions they wish to support. The focus of the committee is: (1) LA Care; (2) School supplies; and (3) Meals on Wheels. For information, contact Marjorie A. Bronk at 512-756-2756. |
