Dear Families & Friends,

Do you know what it is like to grow up never knowing one of your parents? Do you know what it is like to say Mom or Dad to someone who really isn't, because you haven't seen or heard from one of your parents in several years? Do you know what it is like to watch your 'best friends' turn to drugs and fear for your safety, and theirs, and not know what to do because you are only in middle school? Do you know what it is like to watch your drunk parent babble incoherently and only be able to laugh because you can't cry? Do you know what it's like to be tossed between homes like an unwanted pet and pray everyday that your grades will be enough to save you one day from the life you have?

Take a look at the smiling faces of our teenagers that come to our church on Wednesdays and you might not know something was wrong. I have spent the past several weeks really getting to know our youth, and am blown away by some of their stories. We have several kids that deal with more than they should ever have to, and some of them are only 13.

It's not fair what these kids have to face. What makes us think that they will be okay after high school and as they enter the real world if these are the issues they are already dealing with now? What can we do to help a generation that is lost? How can we help teenagers that at times have to learn to fend for themselves?

I am not just the youth director to these kids, but also a mentor and friend. I try to be extra support for the youth whether it is attending their extracurricular events, bringing them food when they are hungry, helping them get a ride home, or just listening to their problems and praying for them. My job is so much more than just teaching them about God. However, I am not the only one that can help the youth. You can too! Take the time to come talk to the teenagers that come to church. Stop by on a Wednesday evening and introduce yourself. If you would like to help in other ways, or anonymously, you can speak with me directly. Whether you want to donate to the youth, or pray for an individual or the group, they just need to know that someone cares.

Josh Groban sings a song called “You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)”. In the song he says, “Don't Give Up. It's Just the Weight of the World. When Your Heart is Heavy, I will Lift it Up.” We can be the ones to help lift up their burdened hearts. As a church family, it is our responsibility to make sure our youth 'Don't Give Up'.

Sincerely,

Sean Moore
